Holy Spirit 04.07.2006
“The notion that just anybody can worship is all wrong. The notion that we can worship without the Spirit is all wrong…Only the Holy Spirit knows how to worship God acceptably.” (A. W. Tozer, “The Chief End of Man,” Sermon #8, Toronto, 1962)
Many would agree that this past Sunday was our best service to date. Freedom, joy, song, Truth, and honesty were some of words that come to mind when thinking of that day. After a vision meeting on Tuesday with Jeff I began to think, “What made that service better, or different, than any other?” Was it my new 12-string guitar? Was it a louder volume? Was it the perfect weather and sunshine? Or, was it the inclusion of the Holy Spirit?
Remember Cain and his religious experience in Genesis 4? One can not have more of an experience than when one talks to God and God talks back. And yet, this experience does not necessarily save anyone. Cain then murdered his brother and lied about it to the audible voice of God! Many of us, including my self, has had a religious experience - and many of those times were not worship because they were missing the only vital ingredient.
If true worship includes the Holy Spirit and if the Holy Spirit is the only one who truly knows how to worship, then what does that look like to you? If the Holy Spirit were a physical being, and he came to High Country Church or Bellevue or where ever you attend, what would he be doing?
