When My Eyes Close 01.14.2006

When we sleep it seems that life stops.

Really, few things matter, few people bother us, our plates are empty. In some ways God’s beauty disappears. To us, we go from busy days to the blackness of our lids - it is then, to us, that life simply goes away. It is in this blackness that God remains.

I had the exiting idea to drive around and take some night shots. It’s a full moon tonight so everything, literally everything, is visible. You could, in fact, drive with your head lights off and it would be perfectly safe (however, not recomended). As I pulled to the side of the road I began to think about God - not really an unusual thing - but I did have a new thought for myself: God’s beauty remains. During these marvelous full moons I can look out of our window and see the Ten Mile Range before I go to sleep…When I wake up, there they are, in all their beauty. What were they doing when I slept?

Is God’s glory wasted when we sleep? Does he bore when we rest our heads? When does he tire at the stillness of night? I was thankfully and happily reminded that His Glory is full and prideful. Without the moons reflection He Glorifies Himself, without my waking hours He is still complete. I love that God does not turn off His beauty when my eyes close; I rejoice in the morning that He has remained faithful to Himself all night long. He is a good man, a glorious Father, a diligent Shephard.

I have prayed that tonight, instead of sugarplums or ponys, that the heavy glow of His beauty - the Twenty-Four Hour Glory - will rest in my dreams. It is in the Heavens - the heart of God - that the beauty of night is savored.
